Wants, Needs and Luxury: Pro-Barbie Tuesday, Feb 27 2007

In the last class we viewed a series of truck and beauty/fashion commercials. We discussed what are needs, desires and our luxuries are. I know that my list came up pretty balanced.  I think a good portions of the things i consume are luxury things and needs. But i think when i was younger, i used to watch so many soaps with m y mom and that lifestyle they were promoting and all the ads, made luxury into a goal to become my need.  Now this can be a good or bad thing because from a young age, i have ad the media embed an image into my head of what i needed , wanted and wanted to be when i get older. I would filter in things that weren’t ” pretty” or posh and i would constantly be intrigued by the advertisements and commercials . I remember when i was younger Mattel’s Barbie and how i wanted to emulate her style, poise and her beauty. To me, she didn’t make me feel insecure or hate myself for not being blue-eyed, blond hair. To me, she was a role model, a kind of person i wanted to grow up to be : confident, full of self-esteem, positive and kind. Now you probably thinking ” How the hell did you come up with that conclusion from a plastic figure?” The answer, the advertisements for a wide array of Mattel’s Barbie line. The commercials always had a narrator or Barbie in her highest spirits, learning a new language, promoting cultural unity, promoting education and other professions like “Business Barbie ” etc. I am trying to be brief because this topic is so huge it will take pages to really prove argument. But all i know is , advertising had a huge impact on my life and the kind of lifestyle i wish to have someday soon. I am not a consumer crazed individual needing fad items. Contrary to that, I love the environment and the simple things in life. I am not wasteful in the things that i buy but am smart. I’d rather invest money into alternate means of energy resources then buy the latest Escalade. I would rather walk then drive but i would rather buy Jimmy Chow then pay-less shoes lol… My point is advertising sells you an image ( of your wants, needs and luxuries ) and I think an individual can either take that image and build from it or create his own image and let the advertising industry and media appeal to that image.

super hero response.. Wednesday, Feb 21 2007

So what i decided to do for this whole leave a message and dash assignment was go into a liquor store and leave messages all over the place. I decided to write up these messages:

1- Drinking will kill you

2- Drink responsibly

3-learn how to have fun-sober.

4- Ah, unwind with a nice cold bottle of Poland springs instead of your usual vodka and tonic

5-You may be enjoying this, but your liver isn’t.

6- I wonder how many brain cells i can destroy tonight

7-Beer goggles. you think you know but you have no idea.

So i randomly placed these messages across each isle in this store and left. I was scared someone would say something but as I put the last one up, I felt good that i could get my message out there. People complain about the tobacco industries and how harmful and addicting their long term events are but what about alcohol? There are so many alcoholics running around hurting our soceities fundamental values and causing domestic violence. The Superbowl is reportedly one of the worst days of the year for domestic violence. Men drink too much and their families get the bad end while they wake up the next morning not knowing what happened.  This is worse then cigarettes and i think more needs to be done in our society to help bring forth this message of drinking responsibly. People abuse the privilege too much.  Our society expects our youth to go off into college and get wasted every weekened and that lifestyle is not frowned down upon. But when these students graduate, they arent just bringing a degree with them but a new way of living. Drinking becomes customary and a habitual thing. I don’t mean to generalize. I know not every man who picks up a beer is abusive or every college student is an alcoholic. But i do know that this is a very serious issue that is being left untouched by so many people. the only person i recall really acting and promoting anti-drinking  is Donald Trump.  All in all, this was a fun assignment.

Carl Jr’s brings sexy back… Wednesday, Feb 21 2007

So the Ad that came to mind when when this assignment was given was none other than the infamous Paris Hilton’s Carl Jr’s Ad. This ad is very sexy and seductive. There are so many elements to this advertisement. What it is saying is that hamburgers shouldn’t be seen as just fast food but a luxury item. They are saying that even rich people like this particular Carl Jr’s burger and if its good enough for Paris, it’s good enough for the rest of the people. 20 seconds out of the 30 showcased Paris basically having sex with the car. It looks like she is orgasming over her very expensive automobile or is it the hamburger she’s getting hot by? It is geared toward men and young adults. this is so cliche because it’s using ” sex sells” in the campaign. Nothing unusual happening in this commercial. Check it out. I have two links. Two are slightly different. Notice one has the actual woman singing and the other doesn’t and how they shot Paris Hilton slightly different. I wonder if they showed different variations of this commercial in different locations? Who knows? All i know is that this commercial made me want a hamburger, some water and a nice big garage with a very lux car=)

Ad-Antismoking Wednesday, Feb 21 2007

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YjrkBYDDQM]

A few weeks ago, we had discussed how the cigarette industry blossomed and became a multi- billion dollar industry. In today’s world, it is safe to say any propagated messages from the tobacco industries like smoking doesn’t cause cancer or smoking isn’t addicting etc, is all past tense. The new reality is that many people are suffering from tobacco addiction and certain not for profit organizations like Truth or Above the Influence, have made it a point to advertise the serve need for smokers to put up their cigs and put a stop to cigarette consumption. Here is an ad from Australia that is so graphic and gruesome it is sure to make any smoker think twice about picking up another fag.

Sut Jhally – Assignment no. 1 Tuesday, Feb 20 2007

What is being addressed in this article?
Advertising is being addressed and how powerful it is in our day and age. Also, it discusses how it has a more negative effect on society. it creates ” greed and selfishness” (reading). The article goes into discussing economic growth and how corporations are pushing society to its limits.
My opinion of the article is that of a mixed one. I can agree and disagree. I think our society does lack compassionate and passionate emotions because they are being influenced by advertisers and corporations. We are no longer individuals in a society, but we are becoming more conformed. Individuals no longer depend on their selves to understand their wants but by advertiser’s and marketers. “I believe this is the irony and downfall of humans as we know it”. I was un-enthused by the Karl Marx references. I know he was a significant philosopher, who had a huge impact on society. I would just like to hear something new pertaining to this topic. I am sure many intellectuals have different view points on this matter and I, for one, would like to hear their thoughts instead of recycled material. I understand the post industrial revolution was the catalyst into the world of advertising. I would like to k now if the advertising industry is so bad, why do the people not challenge and oppose marketer’s and advertisers? Furthermore, I think advertisements have become a demand. More and more people watch commercials in between shows and before movies in theaters. thousands of people gather around the TV during the Super-bowls for their famous commercials. I personally think advertisements have become an educational asset in American society. Where else are people going to find out about the latest trends in fashion, technology and automobiles etc. Our society is to consumed with work that it is hard for an individual to really research the latest and best technology , many other products and services. So i think one’s perspective of the advertisement industry shouldn’t be a pessimistic one, I think it should be viewed in an educational light for the masses. there are too many company’s and corporations in the market for a wide array of people in this free market economy. Society needs to be more responsible on how they perceive ads. Meaning they should be able to filter advertisements. I don’t think any individual is incapable of distinguishing their wants from their needs. If a person is being bombarded with ads, they should be intellectual smart enough to know what is priority to them and not feel “manipulated” by corporations because corporations aren’t forcing individuals to buy products and services but merely displaying their manufactured goods to the public. Simply put, corporations are getting their messages out there and people need to understand they have the power to control what they take in from corporations.
